How to predict failure!

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

We can argue about the definition of project success, but I would not be wrong to guess that most would agree on the following definition: the project was delivered on time, on budget, and to the satisfaction of the client!

Unfortunately, some projects do not achieve this result. Here are 5 signs that can predict the failure of a project and recommended actions to remediate them and change the result:

time is money

Sign#1 The goals of the project are not clear. What to do: Make sure the project team is aligned on clear goals and that they can be measured or tested.

Sign#2 Stakeholders are passive and not involved. What to do: Make sure to keep the stakeholders informed and encourage them to respond and make sure they are involved.

Sign#3 The team's dynamics are not good. What to do: Make sure everyone is aligned on the goals and the plan. There is only one driver, even if the others are the 'experts'. That way the project will have one 'voice' and one way.

Sign#4 Delay-Repeat-Delay... What to do: Manage the risks to the program systematically with mitigation actions and alternative plans for each risk. Make sure that every risk has an owner!

Sign#5 The changes are many and the goal is constantly moving. What to do: Manage changes. Involve stakeholders and make sure there are meanings to every request. Remember that many times "less is more" and there is version 2.0

There are of course many other signs that can predict failure such as exhausted resources, low quality, the solution stability in tests, and more. There is no magic bullet in project management. It requires skills, experience, and perseverance to succeed in facing such challenges.
